At least 3 dead after series of earthquakes in southern Iran

At least three people were killed and eight others injured following a series of earthquakes that struck southern Iran on Saturday, according to state news agency IRIB.

Four separate earthquakes were recorded near the port city of Bandar-e Lengeh in southern Iran, including one with a magnitude of 6.1, according to the United States Geological Survey website ( USGS).

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center also recorded a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in southern Iran.

Shaking could be felt in the United Arab Emirates, according to field reports from CNN staff.

According to the USGS, the other affected countries are Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar and Afghanistan.

The area is known for seismic activity and the USGS included in its update that the “earthquake sequence” reported in the past few hours is “relatively common.”

At least one person has died after a succession of earthquakes rocked southern Iran last November.
