India to play near full-strength squad in five T20Is against West Indies; Virat Kohli might be rested: Report | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Regular skipper Rohit Sharma, pacer Jasprit Bumrahwicket keeper Rishabh Pants and the versatile Hardik Pandya are likely to return to India’s near-complete T20I squad for the five-game series against West Indies. Meanwhile, senior hitter Virat Kohli may be rested from the T20I series in the Caribbean, according to a report from Cricbuzz on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Sharma, Bumrah, Pant, Pandya and Kohli were rested from the three-game ODI series against West Indies, which will be played in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on July 22, 24 and 27. After that, India and West Indies will play five T20Is, starting July 29 in Trinidad, followed by the next two games in St. Kitts and the final two T20Is to be played in Lauderhill, Florida, USA. United.
“The India Twenty20 squad for the upcoming games in the Caribbean will be complete as all the senior white ball team players except possibly Virat Kohli are expected to feature in the five-game series. Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya will be included in the squad to be announced after the third and final T20I against England on July 10,” the report read.
Discussing the possibility of Kohli’s absence from the T20I five-game series, the report said, “Kohli’s absence cannot be construed as being out of order as he is an integral part of the makers plans for the world. He is said to have asked selectors, team management and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not to consider him for the West Indies series. It will be a case of rest rather than an axe.
The report went on to say that ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin could get a surprise recall for the T20I series against West Indies. Ashwin made a return to the shortest format in the game at the Men’s T20 World Cup last year and last played a T20I against New Zealand at Ranchi in November last year.
“Management and coaches also want to test Ashwin, who was recalled for last year’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates but hasn’t had many chances since for a variety of reasons including his physical condition. However, after Dravid and Rohit took over the reins of the team last November, Ashwin learned that his experience and expertise were part of their planning, so it would be a surprise if he didn’t get a callback soon enough. , if not immediately for the West Indies series.
The West Indies series will be India’s second time playing a five-match bilateral T20I series this year, having drawn 2-2 against South Africa in June at home. This gives the Indian team management an extra chance to focus on the personnel who will qualify for the final squad of the T20 Men’s World Cup in Australia in October-November.
“Team management under coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit want to try all possible combinations before finalizing the roster for the World Cup in October-November in Australia, and the selection committee under Chetan Sharma would be on the same wavelength. Both groups will only identify the players – whom they want to choose or leave out for the World Cup – after they have given enough opportunities,” the report concludes.
