Kyrgios makes into maiden Wimbledon semis after overpowering Garin | Tennis News

LONDON: Nick Kyrgios reached the first Grand Slam semi-final of his turbulent career with a comfortable 6-4 6-3 7-6(5) win over Chilean Cristian Garine at Wimbledon Wednesday.
The unseeded 27-year-old lost the first nine points on Court One but ultimately had too much firepower for Garin who was hoping to become Chile’s first semi-finalist at Wimbledon.

By surpassing his previous best run at Wimbledon in the quarter-finals eight years ago, Kyrgios becomes the first Australian to reach a Grand Slam semi-final in 17 years.

On the eve of the match, Kyrgios was summoned to a Canberra court next month on an alleged assault charge, less than ideal preparation for one of his biggest games.

But all the off-pitch distractions he’s managed to push aside in a relatively low-volume display sprinkled occasionally with the instinctive shooting that makes him such a draw.
As in his five-set victory over American Brandon Nakashima in the previous round, Kyrgios kept his volatile temper a secret, although he regularly lambasted his important entourage as the match dragged on.
Once again, his serve buttressed his game, putting him out of trouble whenever Garin threatened to drag himself back into a contest that strayed away from him after his quick start.
Garin, who beat Kyrgios’ compatriot Alex De Minaur in straight sets in the previous round, fought to extend the third set in a tiebreaker and led 5-3 before Kyrgios fought back to win the final four points .
One of the great enigmas of tennis will now face Rafa Nadal or Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals.
“Amazing atmosphere again,” Kyrgios said. “I never thought I would be in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam. I thought that ship had sailed – that I had maybe ruined that window in my career.
“I’m really happy that I was able to come here with my team and put on a performance.”
