Boris Johnson took one of his last walks outside 10 Downing Street this week. After multiple government officials called for his resignation, the UK prime minister stepped down as leader of the Conservative party, which will lead to his departure as prime minister.

Until the end, the flamboyant leader blamed his downfall a political feeding frenzy. “The herd instinct is powerful,” he noted. “In politics, no one is even remotely indispensable.”

In fact, however, most analysts said the main reason for Johnson’s downfall was the loss of confidence following a series of scandals, including perceived misconduct during the COVID-19 blockade and, more recently, his promotion of a lawmaker accused of sexual misconduct.

Johnson said once again on Friday that he will remain as an “interim” prime minister or “custodian” until his party chooses a successor. It is thought not to happen until early September.

One of those not happy: the leader of the opposition Labor Party Keir Starmer. “He needs to go completely,” Starmer said. “None of this nonsense about holding on for a few months.”

Who will replace Boris Johnson? There are no clear leaders. The first major player to throw his hat in the ring is former finance minister Rishi Sunak. Others to follow include Foreign Minister Liz Truss and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

But it is thought that no one, for better or for worse, will be colored like the man they called “Bojo”.

His supporters said it was a good thing Johnson took Britain out of the European Union. Many critics weren’t so sure.

Most said, however, that his defense of the COVID-19 vaccine work in the UK was a result, as was his defense of Ukraine in its war against Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was saddened by Johnson’s departure. The Kremlin said it was a “just reward”.

BORIS JOHNSON SCANDALS: UK PRIME MINISTER HAS FACED MULTIPLE DISPUTES IN OFFICE

Former President Trump was a fan of the outspoken Boris Johnson. The outgoing prime minister has even been dubbed “the British Trump”.

President Biden was less supportive, but in a statement he said, in part: “I look forward to continuing our close cooperation with the UK government.”

In the end, it was the British public who lost patience with the scandalized politician and even turned against him. “He should have left a long time ago,” was a comment echoed across the UK

Johnson finally, after about three years of work, said he understood. “I want you to know how sad I am for giving up the best job in the world”, he said, “but ‘they are the breaks'”.

This last sentence, among other things, caused British newspapers to scramble in search of a translation. Just for the record, it’s American slang for “that’s the way it is”.

Many British observers are clearly hoping for a somewhat more reserved and closer to home successor.
