LONDON: India’s opening pair Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan completed 5,000 ODI races on Tuesday as the opening pair.
The duo achieved that record in the first ODI of the three-match series against England at the Kennington Oval on Tuesday where they made 12 deliveries to reach the milestone.
With this record, the pair became the fourth duo in the world to reach the milestone. First on the list are Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly with a total of 6,609 runs. Coming to the game, a blistering partnership between Rohit and Shikhar and a six-wicket carry by Jasprit Bumrah guided the Indian side to a 10-wicket win over England in the first ODI of the three-game series.
Rohit completed 76 carries on 58 balls while Shikhar scored 31 carries on 54 balls to help the Men in Blue pursue the target of 111 carries in just 18.4 overs. Besides Bumrah, Mohammed Shami took three wickets while Prasidh Krishna settled for one.
Chasing 111, Team India started on a decent note with the opening pair of Rohit and Dhawan steadily advancing the innings. The duo scored 21 runs in six overs, before driving the game forward and breaking 35 runs over the next four overs.
The Men in Blue broke the 50-run mark in 10 overs with both hitters undefeated at the crease. Continuing the proceedings at a steady pace, Rohit raised his half-century to 49 balls and helped Team India reach the 100 run mark in 18 overs.
With just 11 runs to spare, the duo broke 13 runs in the next four balls and carried the Indian side to a 10 wicket win in just 18.4 overs and took a 1-0 lead in the series. three ODI games against England.
The two teams will face off for the second ODI on Thursday at Lord’s, London.
