TERRASSA (Spain): Captain and goalkeeper Savita PuniaHeroism in the shootout helped India beat Canada to record first FIH victory Hockey Women’s World Cup.
After both teams finished regulation time at 1-1, the Indian team beat Canada 3-2 on penalties to advance to the playoffs from 9th to 12th place in the tournament.
Madeline Secco (11′) scored for Canada, while Salima Tete (58′) equalizes for India in regulation time.
Savita, who put on a scintillating spectacle, made a total of six saves in the shootout, while Navneet Kaur, Sonika and Neha converted their chances.
An attacking start to the game saw India with the majority of possession, trying to make room in Canada’s half, but causing little harm.
Canada, on the other hand, was slow to settle into the game and started to put pressure on India. Their first real attack came in the 10th minute when they earned their first penalty corner of the match, but missed the conversion. Within a minute, the Canadians broke the deadlock thanks to Secco, who managed to find the back of the net after a poor penalty corner attempt.
Trailing by one goal, India started the second quarter aggressively and broke through the Canadian defense several times. Such an opportunity presented itself in the 25th minute when Vandana and Navneet combined for a shot on goal, but Rowan Harris avoided danger.
Putting pressure on their opponents, India created several scoring chances in the closing stages of the first half, but the Canadian defense held the Indian attackers at bay to maintain their 1-0 at halftime .
India continued to play aggressively in the third quarter and came on with a close chance of getting parity in the opening minutes of the second half. It was Navjot Kaur who was in an ideal position to shoot on goal, but his attempt went over the bar.
A few minutes later, India conceded another penalty corner but Savita made a superb save.
India won two consecutive penalty corners but failed to convert them. At the last minute, India again missed a golden opportunity to score as Lalremsiami’s diving attempt on Salima Tete’s pass from the right flank missed the target.
Desperate for an equaliser, India rushed to convert a goal in the final quarter. After a number of missed corner attempts, India finally scored an equalizer in the 58th minute through Tete who found the back of the net with a perfectly executed corner variation. Canada immediately earned another penalty corner, which was held by the Indian defence.
On July 13, India will face Japan in the 9th-12th Placement Match at 2000 IST.
