For the fourth consecutive year, IIT-M tops the overall category rankings and has continued to be described as the “best engineering institute in the country,” a position it has conquered consecutively since the rankings were introduced in 2016. Miranda House also maintained its pole position in the college category, which it has held since the category’s introduction in 2017. The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, ranks first in the university and research categories.
Wanted colleges like Saint Stephen‘s, Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and Lady Shri Ram (LSR) fell in the rankings, with St Stephen’s not in the top 10 for the first time.
In addition to maintaining its position in the Absolute and Engineering categories, IIT-M is also in the top 10 in research (second) and management (tenth). IIT-M was recognized as an Institution of Eminence (IoE) in September 2019 by the government.

The NIRF process provides detailed feedback on our strengths and weaknesses. As we continue to exploit our strengths, we will address the weaknesses to move forward. ”
Launched in 2016, NIRF formulated a methodology for ranking educational institutions. The parameters used for the ranking broadly cover teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practices; outcome of the degree; awareness and inclusiveness; and perception.
Releasing the National Institutional Ranking Framework: India Rankings 2022 on Friday, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced that accreditation and assessment will be mandatory for every higher education institution and will also be part of the NIRF classification system.
“Within the next year we will be unifying the institutional accreditation that is currently carried out by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and program accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The innovation ranking previously made by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will also be integrated with NIRF. All institutions will be part of the combined evaluation, accreditation and ranking system. Such a system will be transparent and objective, “she said.
“From next year, the NIRF ranking categories will also include innovation and entrepreneurship. The categories of the NIRF rankings can be increased as needed. There is already work in progress on the rankings of industrial training institutes (ITI) and polytechnics, “she added.
Jamia Millia Islamia and Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) are the two higher education institutions that have achieved significant improvements in their rankings over the past three years. In the university category, JMI improved its ranking from 10th in 2020 to 3rd this year, while also being in the top 10 in law (7) and architecture (9), as well as being in the top 20 in dentistry ( 16). The Vellore Institute of Technology entered the research top 10 (10), while it was ninth in the university category, compared to 16th in 2020.
The seven IITs – Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee and Guwahati – were among the top 10 in the overall and engineering rankings.
While IISc tops the university rankings, JNU and JMI in second and third place respectively. Banaras Hindu University (BHU), ranked third last year, slipped to sixth place. Others in the top 10 are Jadavpur University (4), Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (5), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (7), University of Calcutta (8), VIT (9) and University of Hyderabad (10), bagged the next positions in the university category.
While Miranda House maintained its place as the best college in the country, Hindu College improved its rank to come in second from last year’s ninth position. LSR slipped to fifth from second place last year while Presidency College, Chennai moved up to third from seventh. Loyola College in Chennai slipped to fourth from third while Shri Ram College of Commerce slipped out of the top 10.
