India continued its wrestling dominance at the Birmingham Games. Famous wrestler Vinesh Phogat completed a hat-trick of gold medals at the Commonwealth Games by winning the women’s 53kg freestyle wrestling. She beat Sri Lanka’s Chamodya Keshani Maduravlage Don for a podium finish. Prior to this, Vinesh had won gold in the two previous CWG editions in Gold Coast (in 2018) and Glassgow (in 2014). Her golden win brought joy to the country as fans flooded their social media timeline with images of Vinesh from Birmingham. She beat her Sri Lankan opponent in just 2 minutes and 24 seconds with a falling victory. The grappler of the famous Phogat family had won all her bouts with cruise control. With only four wrestlers competing in the 53kg weight class, the medals were decided in Nordic format, a different round-robin format than knockout in all other weight classes. With her latest victory, Vinesh became the first Indian wrestler to win three consecutive CWG gold medals. Meanwhile, Team India has so far won 40 medals at the current CWG, including 13 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze.
