UNITED NATIONS: China postponed a proposal by the United States and India to sanction the UN on Wednesday Security Council a senior commander based in Pakistan Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant group, diplomats said.
They wanted India and the United States Abdul Rauf Azhar be subject to a global travel ban and asset freeze. This move must be approved by all 15 members of a Security Council sanctions committee.
“We have placed a suspension because we need more time to investigate the case. The suspension is foreseen by the committee’s guidelines and there have been numerous similar suspensions by committee members on the list of demands,” a spokesman for the Chinese mission at the Lo the United Nations told Reuters.
The US Treasury designated Azhar in 2010, accusing him of urging Pakistanis to engage in militant activities and organize suicide attacks in India.
The United States respects the need for other countries to verify that a proposed sanctions meet their “internal evidential threshold to justify a list at the United Nations,” a spokesman for the US mission to the United Nations said Wednesday.
“The United States appreciates cooperation with our Security Council partners to effectively use this tool in an apolitical manner to prevent terrorists from exploiting the global order to carry out their misdeeds,” the spokesman said.
