Johnny Depp Gets First Big Movie Role After Court Victory Over Amber Heard | Entities and news on the arts

New images of Hollywood star Johnny Depp show him in his first film since the conclusion of his multimillion-dollar libel case against ex-wife Amber Heard.

The photos show Depp in royal robes, with a white feathered hat, curled white hair and a black eye patch, for the forthcoming film Jeanne Du Barry, produced by French company Why Not Productions.

The 59-year-old actor won the now infamous legal battle against Heard in the United States in June.

Depp sued his ex-wife in a 2018 article he wrote for the Washington Post about his experiences as a domestic abuse survivor, which his lawyers allegedly falsely accused him of being a harasser.

Representatives of the actor said he had missed job opportunities and high-profile roles, such as being dropped from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise after the allegations.

The jurors found themselves in his favor after a six-week trial.

Jeanne Du Barry is directed by French director Maiwenn and is said to have started shooting at the end of July following the conclusion of the trial.

It is Depp’s first major acting role since 2020 independent film Minamata in which he played war photographer W. Eugene Smith.

He was forced by Warner Bros to leave the Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts spin-off series in 2020 after losing the libel suit against The Sun newspaperwho had described him as a “wife beater”.

Jeanne Du Barry follows Jeanne, a young working-class woman who uses her intelligence and charm to climb the social hierarchy, ending up on King Louis XV’s radar.

The cast is also rumored to include Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, Noemie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory and India Hair.
