COIMBATOR: A male Go first Bengaluru flight with 92 passengers on board carried out a emergency landing at Coimbatore International Airport on Friday after smoke detectors exploded in the plane as it flew into Kochi air traffic control airspace.
The Airbus 320 plane made a safe landing at the airport at around 12:57 pm. Engineers checked the plane and said the smoke alarm was triggered due to a malfunction. No problems were detected with the plane. Passengers are likely to be brought to Male in an other flight in the evening.
Sources at the airport said the flight landed about 10-15 minutes after the May Day declaration at the airport. Meanwhile, a separate seat has been allocated for the flight. Two firefighters were kept in position near the runway and all the men were gathered to extinguish the fire and rescue the passengers.
Medical teams have also been alerted to handle the situation in the event of a fire.
Coimbatore Airport Director S Senthil Valavan said: “The Coimbatore Air Traffic Control Unit has declared full emergency at the airport. All precautions have been taken and the firefighters placed in a predetermined position. The plane landed in Coimbatore, the pilot has brought all operations back to normal, “he said.
The flight took off from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru at 12:13 pm. The scheduled departure time was 11:45 am. He should have reached Male by 1:30 pm.
Passengers were worried about the delay in reaching their destination. Shriya Runwal, a lawyer turned entrepreneur, said their vacation would be ruined due to the delay. Transportation from Male ‘airport would not be available after 6pm and they would not be able to reach the booked accommodation. They might have to spend the night at the airport, he said
“I paid Rs 76,000 for two people for a return airfare and spent a fortune on accommodation. The flight operator should take full responsibility for ruining the vacation. We want our airline ticket money refunded and our losses compensated, ”she said.
He said they had not been informed of the reasons for the emergency landing even after the flight landed.
