The 15th edition of the Asian Cricket Cup begins on Saturday August 27 with a clash between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. But, the match everyone is looking forward to is of course India vs Pakistan. The two cricketing heavyweights kick off their Asian Cup campaign this time around with this clash on Sunday, August 28. This time, the Asian Cup is played in the T20 format as a preparatory tournament for the year-end T20 World Cup in Australia.
The tournament is being played this time in the United Arab Emirates, although Sri Lanka is the official host. The tournament could not be played as planned in the island nation due to the ongoing political crisis in Sri Lanka.
Since 2016, the Asian Cup has been played in rotation between the ODI and T20 formats, depending on the next scheduled ICC World Tournament.
Hong Kong became the third team in Group A, which includes India and Pakistan, on Wednesday August 24. India are set to face Hong Kong on August 31.

India are the defending champions, having beaten Bangladesh in the last edition final in 2018 by 3 wickets.

The very first edition of the Asian Cup was played in 1984 in the United Arab Emirates. There were only 3 teams that participated in the inaugural edition – India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. All teams played each other once. India won the title on the basis of the most points (8) after winning their two games. Sri Lanka was second with 4 points, with one win and one loss. Pakistan finished with 0 points after losing to India and Sri Lanka.
Here is how the 6 teams were divided into two groups for Asian Cup 2022:
