The USTA said all ticket proceeds from the event went to GlobalGiving’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, which supports humanitarian relief in affected communities in Ukraine and surrounding areas where Ukrainian refugees fled.

Several hours before the event, the USTA announced that Victoria Azarenka of Belarus would not be participating, stating: “For the past 24 hours, after careful consideration and dialogue with all parties involved, Victoria Azarenka will not be participating in our ‘Tennis Plays for Peace Exhibition’ tonight.

“Vika is a solid player and we appreciate her willingness to participate. Given the sensitivities of the Ukrainian players and the ongoing conflict, we believe this is the right course of action for us.”

The event comes after Ukraine’s Ministry of Youth and Sports announced in a statement on Tuesday that 133 Ukrainian athletes and coaches have died so far during the six-month Russian invasion of the country.
