Several people have been killed after a truck crashed into a neighborhood barbecue in the Netherlands.
At least three people died in the incident in the village of Nieuw-Beijerland on Saturday, Dutch television channel NOS reported.
Police said they were investigating what caused the truck to leave the road in the village, just south of Rotterdam, and continue on the side of a dike.
“At some point a truck left the road and crashed into the party,” a police spokesman told local TV station Rijnmond.
It is unclear what caused the incident, police said, or the specific number of people who were killed or injured because the truck has not yet been removed from the site.
Footage released by local media showed a heavy truck from a Spanish transport company at the foot of a small seawall, with picnic tables smashed at the scene.
Dutch newspaper Gelderlander said the truck driver – a 46-year-old Spanish man – was taken to the station for questioning.
According to the police, he said he was “very shocked”, according to the newspaper.
