Bianca Andreescu gives Nike a dressing down at US Open before issuing apology

Andreescu was on the grandstand pitch to perform Harmony Tan, but the winds from the open arena kept billowing her skirt and affecting her shots, forcing the 22-year-old to approach the chair umpire and asking for an extra break in the bathroom to change.

“Won’t that count as one of my changes? I mean it’s not my fault, it’s Nike’s fault,” she told the referee.

“This dress is so, so bad…I have to go (change), it’s really bad.”

Andreescu came back wearing a white Nike tank top and skirt to eventually beat Tan 6-0 3-6 6-1.

“It just bothered me on some forehands. I just felt like it was going up a bit. Obviously the wind didn’t help,” she told reporters.

“But I didn’t want to disrespect what I said to the referee. I was trying to convince him not to take that toilet break away because I know we only have two. He was very nice to say that everything was fine.

“I definitely could have used another choice of wording. So I apologize to anyone I’ve disrespected. I love Nike and hope I can be with them for the rest of my life. life !”

Andreescu will next face Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round.
