Former Canadian MP Pierre Poilievre was chosen on Saturday as the leader of the Conservative Party and will lead the party’s mission to push Liberals and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau out of the country’s government.
Poilievre, 43, was declared the winner with 68% of the votes in the first round of the classified choice vote. He is the sixth leader of the Conservatives since 2015.
He campaigned to reduce the role of the state in people’s lives and cut public spending and taxes that he blames for rising inflation.
The new conservative leader has defeated four opponents, including his main competitor Jean Charest, a former premier of Quebec. During his campaign, Poilievre criticized Trudeau and the central bank governor for failing to control rising inflation.

“Tonight begins the journey to replace an old government that costs you more and offers you less with a new government that puts you first: your paycheck, your pension, your home, your country,” he said. Poilievre in his victory speech.
Poilievre became a member of parliament in 2004 at the age of 25. He later served as Minister for Democratic Reform and as Minister for Employment and Social Development until Trudeau took office in 2015.
With the support of Trudeau from the New Left Democrats, the elections could go all the way to 2025. And pollsters have suggested that Poilievre will be a formidable opponent against Trudeau if the prime minister runs a fourth time.

“Here are two people who know exactly how to push each other’s buttons, who know exactly how to get under each other’s skin,” said Angus Reid Institute president Shachi Kurl of Poilievre and Trudeau.
Poilievre in February supported the convoy of Canadian truckers and its supporters who blocked border crossings as part of a protest against Trudeau and his policies on COVID-19 vaccines for truckers.

The new Conservative Party leader also promised during his campaign that he will fire Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem. Poilievre attributed the price increases to the central bank’s purchase of pandemic bonds.
