After months of negotiations, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said Sunday there are “encouraging signs” that the US and European allies will not accept a new nuclear deal with Iran.

“After the Americans, yesterday the E3 countries announced that a nuclear deal with Iran will not be signed in the near future,” said Lapid, referring to France, the United Kingdom and Germany.

“Israel is conducting a successful diplomatic campaign to stop the nuclear deal and prevent the lifting of sanctions on Iran. It is not over yet. There is still a long way to go, but there are encouraging signs.”

Iran presented a proposal earlier this month to the European Union, which has mediated negotiations between Tehran and Washington for months, but Secretary of State Antony Blinken said it was not productive.

“In the past few weeks, we have filled in some gaps. Iran had turned away from some extraneous requests, requests unrelated to the JCPOA itself,” Blinken told NATO headquarters in Belgium on Friday.

“However, the last answer brings us back and we have no intention of accepting an agreement that does not meet our basic requirements.”
