A tough JEE (Advanced) test and difficult years of preparation during the pandemic likely led to this new low in entry results for the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) announced Sunday morning by IIT-Bombay, the organizing institute.
But the good news is that the girls in the current batch outperformed last year’s with seven finishing in the top 100 compared to just one last year.
The IIT-Delhi area had the highest number of students (133) in the top 500 of the JEE (Advanced) 2022 results. The IIT-Madras club, which hosts the highest number of top 10 (five), is closely followed to 132. The IIT-Bombay area, with three finishers in the top 10, had the third highest count of the top 500 finishers.
As of several years now, no Mumbai student has made it into the top 10 ranks.

Bengaluru boy Shishir RK, who secured All India Rank (AIR) 1 from the IIT-Bombay zone, scored 314/360 in the JEE (Advanced) test. Tanishka Kabra (AIR 16) from the IIT-Delhi area was the girl at the head of India.
Both toppers will join the computer science program – Shishir and Tanishka will join the Powai campus.
Both gave credit to their families for believing in them; “being consistent” was their secret sauce for breaking the JEE (A). Polu Lakshmi Sai Lohith Reddy is AIR 2 and Thomas Biju Cheeramvelil is AIR 3.
The qualification criterion is such that IITs include candidates at least twice the number of places available in each category.
“And the qualification numbers are in line with those of previous years,” said JEE (Advanced) organization president Suryanarayana Doolla.
Subhasis Chaudhuri, director, IIT-B, said there has been a marginal reduction in the cuts. “But I wouldn’t call it significantly different. The minimum qualification score in each subject this year is 5.
A total of 40,712 candidates qualified for JEE (Advanced) 2022, including 6,516 girls.
Of the 1.2 lakhs or 78.4% of the total male candidates, 34,196 or 28% qualified. The number of qualified female candidates was 6,516.
Extra seats for women on campuses gradually increased from 14% in 2018 to 20% last year to encourage them to opt for IIT for their undergraduate studies and to cope with their low participation in technical education. The additional 20% of extra seats will have no effect on existing seats.
A total of 145 foreigners qualified in the JEE (A). More OBC candidates took the exam this year than those in the general category: 56,538 (9,341 qualified) took the exam against 38,180 (15,277 qualified) in the open category.
The total number of seats increased to 16,598 from 16,232 and 13,000 last year in 2019.
