DHAKA: A 15-year-old boy Rohingya A boy was killed and at least six people injured when mortar shells fired from Myanmar exploded in Bangladesh, the latest in a string of violent incidents, officials and a Rohingya leader said.
More than a million Rohingya live in camps in southern Bangladesh that make up the world’s largest refugee camp, with the vast majority having fled Myanmar during a military crackdown in 2017.
The Rohingyas were caught in the crossfire between the Burmese army and the Arakan Armyan armed group fighting for self-determination for ethnic minorities in Rakhine State.
The teenager was killed late Friday, Dil said Mohammeda Rohingya leader in no man’s land, a strip of land along the Myanmar-Bangladesh border where around 4,000 Rohingya live.
“We live here in constant fear. Any time disaster may strike,” Mohammed told Reuters by telephone.
Strong protests would be lodged with Myanmar over the incident, a Bangladeshi government official and a border guard official said.
Bangladesh issued a statement this month expressing its “deep concern over the fall of mortar shells inside Bangladeshi territory, indiscriminate aerial fire from Myanmar in border areas and violation of the airspace by Myanmar”.
Myanmar’s envoy to Dhaka has been convened three times over the past few weeks so that these concerns can be conveyed.
