Shiva Thapa, Lovlina Borgohain in Indian boxing squad for Asian Championships | Boxing News

NEW DELHI: Veteran Shiva Thapa and bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics Lovlina Borgohain will spearhead the Indian men’s and women’s challenge respectively during the Asian Boxing Championships next month.
The selection trials for the continental showpiece to be held in Amman, Jordan, from October 30 to November 12, took place at NIS Patiala from Thursday to Saturday.
The likes of reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen, three-time Asian Championships medalist Amit Panghal and Birmingham Commonwealth Games medalists Toka Rohit and sagar ahlawat skipped the tests.
While Zareen missed the tournament to get some much-needed rest, Panghal, Tokas and Ahlawat are nursing injuries, a source from the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) told PTI.
Thapa is a five-time Asian medalist. His record includes one gold, two silver and as many bronze medals.
Last edition, he won a fifth consecutive medal, a silver, at the prestigious event, becoming the most successful Indian male boxer in the history of the tournament.
The only other male pugilist with five Asian championship medals is Kazakh legend Vassiliy Levit, an Olympic silver medalist and two-time world bronze medalist.
Two-time Commonwealth bronze medalist Md. Hussamuddin (57kg) is the other big name on the men’s team.
Borgohain will have a point to prove after enduring two disappointing tournaments – the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games.
The 24-year-old, who returned with a bronze medal last edition, will compete in the 75kg weight class as she begins her preparation for the Paris Olympics, which will not include her welterweight class 69kg.
The women’s team also includes a bronze medalist at the world championships Parveen Hooda (63 kg) and world junior boxing champion Alfiya Pathan.
The Indian contingent is expected to leave for Amman in mid-October for a 15-day training camp ahead of the tournament.
