MUMBAI: BCCI will hold its long-awaited elections and annual general meeting here on October 18.
In a communication (TOI has a copy) to state associations on Thursday, the secretary of the BCCI Jay Shah wrote: “Notice is hereby given that the 91st Annual General Meeting of BCCI, to be held in Mumbai on 18th October 2022 to transact business in accordance with the attached agenda. The time and place of the Annual General Meeting will be informed in due course. Minutes of the 90th AGM held on December 4, 2021 are attached. The rest of the agenda documents will follow shortly. to attend the meeting.”
More importantly, the agenda (this document has a copy) of the AGM call includes: “B. Election of Officers of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and of the treasurer of the BCCI.” It will be interesting to see whether the current BCCI chairman, former India Sourav Ganguly, runs for the job again and is re-elected, or, if speculation is to be believed, Jay Shah, currently secretary and extremely popular among state units, is elected as the new chairman of the board. After the Supreme Court changed its order regarding the chill clause on September 14, the two can continue in their positions. The name of the current Board Treasurer, Arun Dhumal, is making the rounds for the position of new Secretary, but it will come as no surprise that the current status will be maintained for the sake of continuity.
In line with Agenda Item R, BCCI will also appoint its representative(s) to the International Cricket Council, where currently Shah and Ganguly field India. It would be interesting to see if Ganguly, in case he leaves the position of chairman of the board, will be chosen for this post, or if the BCCI chooses its former chairman N Srinivasan for this position. Crucially, the BCCI will also appoint a new Cricket Advisory Committee. The current committee has only two members, RP Singh and Sulakshna Naik, after its chairman Madan Lal became ineligible at the age of 70. selection committee last December due to having completed his term on various selection committees.
This question can be addressed under points BB and CC which mention: “Examination of any question that the president may deem necessary to include on the agenda”; and “Transaction of any other informal business authorized by the President.”
BCCI will also appoint an ombudsman and an ethics officer at the AGM. In July this year, BCCI had appointed retired Supreme Court Justice, Justice Vineet Saran, as Ombudsman and Ethics Officer.
