The warning comes the day after India raised concerns with Canada that its territory was being used by politically motivated “extremist elements”. In reaction to a recently held Khalistan referendum led by separatist groups, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi he called it a “farcical exercise”.
“The authors were not brought to justice”
The notice issued on Friday says there has been a sharp increase in incidents of hate crime, sectarian violence and anti-India activity in Canada.
“The MEA and our High Commissioner / Consulates General in Canada took up these incidents with the Canadian authorities and asked them to investigate these crimes and take appropriate action. The perpetrators of these crimes have so far not been brought to justice in Canada, “he added.
“In view of the growing incidence of crimes as described above, Indian citizens and students from India in Canada and those traveling to Canada for travel / education are advised to exercise due caution and remain vigilant,” he said.
Khalistan referendum
Some Canadian groups had participated in the separatist event of Brampton city of Canada on September 19.
India has profoundly objected that “politically motivated exercises by extremist elements” may take place in a friendly country like Canada, it said. “We would call it a farcical exercise. A farcical exercise was held by extremists and radical elements who supported the so-called Khalistan referendum in Canada,” Bagchi said.
“The issue has been addressed with the Canadian authorities through diplomatic channels. The government of Canada has reiterated that it respects India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and will not recognize the so-called referendum that is taking place in Canada”, Lo has said the spokesman of the MEA.
