HYDERABAD: double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will not participate in the National games as she hasn’t fully recovered from an ankle injury, but the shutter ace will be in attendance at the opening ceremony.
Sindhu, who is on the road to recovery after injuring his ankle at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, will be in Gujarat for the opening ceremony on September 29 along with other sports stars.
The badminton action starts in Surat on October 2.
“It’s a pity that I’m not participating in the Games because of my injury. If I had been fit, I would have definitely represented my state (Telangana),” Sindhu said.
“The National Games are a great opportunity for all athletes and everyone I’ve spoken to is thrilled about it. I’m sure the badminton matches will be very exciting.”
Winner of the silver medal at the Rio 2016 Games and the bronze in Tokyo OlympicsSindhu is the flag bearer of Indian badminton.
“It’s important that I take care of myself and focus on the challenges ahead in 2023 (Asian Games) and 2024 (Paris Olympics),” she explained.
Sindhu’s father, PV Ramana, himself an international volleyball player, said it was unfortunate that she could not participate in the National Games.
“She was very keen to compete. Unfortunately, she can’t because her next checkup with the doctors and MRI will be the first week of October,” he said.
The left ankle injury was described as a stress fracture. The treatment protocol revolves around the granting of the ankle rest.
“I will be part of her rehabilitation program. Having been a volleyball player, I know what it’s like to make heavy landings. I will pass on my experience to Sindhu once she returns to training,” said Ramana.
Sindhu was injured in Birmingham.
“She did not speak about the injury and used conservative treatment to continue playing at the Commonwealth Games. This included icing, strapping the area on the advice of her trainer, physios and doctors,” said said Ramana.
Sindhu was unable to participate in the world championship recently because she was resting. According to his last consultation with orthopedic experts in Hyderabad, he was advised to rest more.
