Russia replaces the top logistic general in Ukraine between setbacks on the battlefield

Russia has reportedly replaced one of its top logistical generals following several setbacks in the invasion of Ukraine that began in February.

Army General Dmitry Bulgakov, 67, was relieved of his post and replaced on Saturday by Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev, 60, The AFP reportedadding that it is not clear to which position Bulgakov was reassigned.

Mizintsev is known in the region as the “Butcher of Mariupol” for his role in the capture of the Ukrainian city earlier this year.

The move comes as a successful counter-offensive by Ukrainian troops repelled the Russian forces in the northeastern region of Kharkiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in a seven-minute speech this week that he was launching a “partial mobilization” of new troops by enlisting all combat-capable reservists and veterans.

“Citizens who are currently in the reserve will be subject to draft,” he said early Wednesday. “And above all, those who have served in the armed forces have some military specialization and relevant experience.”

Reports have since emerged suggesting there was a breakdown of command and control into the ranks of Russia as it withdrew from Kharkiv, prompting its soldiers to abandon not only military equipment but their own troops.

But Western officials said it’s too early to tell whether Ukraine’s ability to regain some 3,300 square miles will be a game changer or whether Russia has another operational ploy in the seasoned sleeve.
