With six miles to go, Yalemzerf Yehualaw’s race appeared to have been ruined after the Ethiopian was left on the road after tripping over a speed bump.

The incident lost her time on rivals and she later admitted the face “hurt”.

But that didn’t stop the 23-year-old from making history on Sunday as she finally crossed the finish line first to become the youngest winner of the London Marathon.

Her victory, in two hours, 17 minutes and 25 seconds, was the third fastest time in women’s racing history, the fastest time ever and an Ethiopian record.

Yehualaw, who had only run his first competitive marathon in April, paused with four miles to go and clocked a remarkable 4:43 mile split over mile 24.

2021 champion Joyciline Jepkosgei finished second at 41 seconds, while Ethiopian Alemu Megertu finished third.

In the men’s race, Kenyan Amos Kipruto won for the first time, finishing in two hours, four minutes and 39 seconds.

Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner set new course records by winning the men’s and women’s wheelchair titles respectively.
