Mars Orbiter not recoverable, Mangalyaan mission over, Isro confirms

BENGALARU: The Indian Space Research Organization confirmed on Monday that the Mars Orbiter aircraft has lost communication with the ground station, is unrecoverable and the Mangaliaan mission has reached the end of life.
The Isro gave an update on the Mars Orbiter mission and the national meeting held on September 27 to commemorate the MOM, on the occasion of the completion of its eight years of Martian orbit.

It was also discussed that, despite being designed to run for six months as a technology demonstrator, MOM lived for about eight years in Martian orbit with a range of significant scientific findings on Mars and the solar corona, prior to lose communication with the ground station, following a long eclipse in April 2022, the national space agency said.

During the national meeting, Isro resolved that the propellant had to be depleted and, therefore, it was not possible to obtain the “target altitude desired” for sustained energy production, Isro said.
“It has been stated that the spacecraft is not recoverable and has reached the end of its life cycle,” reads an ISRO statement. “The mission will always be regarded as an extraordinary technological and scientific feat in the history of planetary exploration.”

MOM was launched on November 5, 2013, and after completing 300 days of interplanetary travel, it was placed in Martian orbit on September 24, 2014.
“Equipped with five scientific payloads on board, during these eight years, the mission has provided significant scientific understanding of surface characteristics, morphology, as well as the Martian atmosphere and exosphere,” said Isro.
