MANAMA: Indian weightlifters Jhili Dalabehera and Gyaneshwari Yadav finished fourth and fifth respectively in the very exhausted women’s 49kg competition at the Asian Championships.
Jhilli and Gyaneshwari lifted the same total of 171kg on Saturday night.
Jhili, a former Asian Championship gold medalist in the 45 kg event, lifted (77 kg + 94 kg). If she had managed to lift 94 kg in her third clean and jerk attempt, she would have won the bronze medal.
Junior world silver medalist Gyaneshwari, meanwhile, recorded her personal best in both the snatch (76kg) and clean and jerk (95kg).
It was in the same weight category that Mirabai Chanu, who missed the continental tournament, won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, with an effort of 202 kg (87 kg + 115 kg).
In the last edition of the tournament, Chanu won the bronze medal in the women’s 49kg event and also recorded the current clean and jerk world record of 119kg.
China’s Jiali Wang took gold with an effort of 186 kg (81 kg + 105 kg).
Chinese Taipei’s Jing Lin Cheng, who lifted 181kg (79kg-102kg), and Yulduz Jumabayeva of Turkmenistan 172kg (75kg+97kg), won silver and bronze respectively.
Earlier on Saturday, Harshada Garud won a bronze medal in the women’s 45kg event.
India fielded a 13-member squad for the tournament, made up mostly of juniors.
Several top lifters from across the continent have opted to miss the tournament and instead focus on the World Championships in December, which will also serve as the qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
