Padres vs Mets: Joe Musgrove subjected to ear probe as San Diego moves onto NLDS after decisive 6-0 win against New York

Pitcher Joe Musgrove was subjected to an ear probe by umpires in the San Diego Padres’ dominating 6-0 win over the New York Mets as they advanced to the National League Division Series.

Late in the sixth inning, Mets manager Buck Showalter instructed the referees to pause play and check Musgrove for possible sticky substance use after noticing his ears were shiny.

But after checking the right-hander’s face, glove and hat, nothing suspicious was found.

“I think he was looking for some kind of substance that helped me get the ball rolling. I’ve seen it before,” Musgrove later told reporters.

“By the time of the game when it happened, I was already so connected, all of my throws felt good,” he added. “I felt like I was running, so I almost let it shoot me.”

Musgrove allowed just one hit in seven innings in Sunday’s game at Citi Field, striking out five. He became the first pitcher in major league history to pitch seven shutout innings and allow one hit in a postseason winner-takes-all game.

The Padres next face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a five-game NLDS, starting Tuesday.

When asked about substance control, Mets manager Showalter said he “likes[s]”Musgrove as pitcher but” get[s] lots of information in the dugout” and is “charged with doing what’s best for the New York Mets.”

He added that “turnover rates and different things” prompted him to ask for the check, after which Mets fans started chanting “cheating” chants at Musgrove.

Padres manager Bob Melvin, meanwhile, questioned the decision to call an investigation.

“The problem I have is that Joe Musgrove is a man of character,” he said. “Questioning his character – for me – that’s the part I have a problem with. I’m here to tell everyone that Joe Musgrove is as honest as any pitcher I know, no. any player I know.
