TOISA 2021: Neeraj Chopra wins Sportsperson of the Year award; Bishan Bedi got the career


NEW DELHI: Neeraj Chopra he traded his javelin for a badminton racket. PV Sindhu no. What followed was an impromptu game of badminton on the court Times of India Sports Awards 2021 (TOISA) in the Capital on Fridays. Don’t ask who won. It was one of those games where no one scored because they were both winning. Arguably two of India’s top Olympians, Chopra and Sindhu, were at their best for the fun-loving on stage.
Not only Chopra and Sindhu, but other sports stars – both present and former – from the country also enjoyed themselves at TOISA 2021. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu couldn’t help but hoist the event host when asked if he could have done the stunt. Bursts of laughter echoed in the hall after Chanu’s act. The start of the day was filled with excitement and anticipation as the cream of Indian sports gathered under one roof to celebrate the best of 2021.

Predictably, Chopra claimed the first Sportsman of the Year award. 2021 saw Chopra win a historic gold at the Tokyo Olympics. “I am grateful to TOISA and the members of the jury for awarding me this award and selecting me. Of course, these kinds of awards give me a lot of confidence and encouragement to go further, ”Chopra told TOI.

The event was attended by a number of dignitaries including India Hockey President Dilip Tirkey, Indian Athletics Federation President Adille Sumariwalla, Indian Sports Authority Director General Sandip Pradhan and former Indian cricketer Madan Lal.
Spin legend Bishan Singh Bedi received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Paratrooper shooter Avani Lekhara, who won gold and bronze at the Tokyo Paralympics, was awarded the Para Sportsman of the Year.

In addition to special awards, which included Sportsman of the Year, Para Sportsman of the Year, Team of the Year, Manager of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award, TOISA 2021 saw winners in both men’s and women’s categories in 16 disciplines. They were: archery, track and field, para athletics, badminton, para badminton, boxing, chess, cricket, soccer, hockey, target shooting, para-shooting, ping pong, para ping pong, wrestling and weightlifting.
The Indian men’s hockey team won the Team of the Year award. The Coach of the Year award was jointly awarded to national weightlifting coach Vijay Sharma and Olympic bronze medalist boxer coach Lovlina Borgohain Sandhya Gurung.
Young weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga, who recently won gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, won the Young Achiever of the Year award. “I am honored to receive the award. My goal now is to win a medal at the Paris Olympics. It’s about keeping fit and continuing to train hard, ”Lalrinnunga said.

A special award – Outstanding Achievement in Sports – was awarded to the Tokyo Olympics bronze medal wrestler Bajrang Punia. Among other awards, boxing legend Mary Kom received the Inspiring Woman of the Decade award, while fencer Bhawani Devi won the Building New Sport award. The Indian Athletics Federation received the best federation award. Coming to the various sports awards that were awarded, the double Olympic medal PV Sindhu got the Badminton Player of the Year (female), while Kidambi Srikanth got the award in the men’s section.
“It is a great achievement to bring together so many athletes from the past and present. I have to congratulate all the winners. The award is definitely an encouragement for morale, “Sindhu said.
“I will do my best to get the missing gold in the Paris Olympics”.
Jasprit Bumrah took the Cricketer of the Year (male) and Smriti Mandhana took the corresponding award in the female category.

Sunil Chhetri won Player of the Year in the men’s section, while Manisha Kalyan won the award in the women’s section.
Hockey player of the year (male and female) went to PR Sreejesh and Savita Punia. Wrestler of the Year (male and female) was awarded to Ravi Dahiya and Anshu Malik.

Boxer of the Year (male and female) was awarded to Akash Kumar and Lovlina Borgohain. The Weightlifter of the Year (male and female) was awarded to Achinta Sheuli and Mirabai Chanu.
A jury made up of former hockey player Sandeep Singh, Olympic bronze medal boxer Vijender Singh, shooter Gagan Narang, long jumper Anju Bobby George, Paralympic Deepa Malik and former cricketer Madan Lal chose the winners.
