US will continue to impose sanctions on arms trade between Russia and Iran: White House


WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States will continue to vigorously enforce sanctions against Russia’s arms trade with Iran, the White House said, saying it would stand with the people of Ukraine as long as it will be necessary.
This will make it harder for Iran to sell these weapons to Russia, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily press conference on Monday.
There is ample evidence that Russia is using Iranian drones to target military and civilian targets in Ukraine, she added.
“We will continue to vigorously enforce U.S. sanctions on the Russian and Iranian arms trade – that’s what we’ll do from here, make it harder for Iran to sell those arms to Russia. And we’ll stick to the alongside our partners throughout the region against this Iranian threat,” said Jean-Pierre.
Responding to questions, she said national security adviser Jake Sullivan warned in July that Iran planned to sell UAVs to Russia for use against Ukraine.
“We have also publicly disclosed that Russia received drones from Iran, that it was part of Russia’s plan to import hundreds of Iranian drones of various types, and that Russian operators continue to receive training in Iran on how to use these same systems,” she added. said.
“There is therefore ample evidence of their use by Russia against military and civilian targets there (in Ukraine),” she added.
Jean-Pierre said the United States is in daily contact with Ukrainians across the administration, from the national security adviser to the Department of Defense and the State Department.
On Friday, the United States announced an additional $725 million security package for Ukraine to meet its basic needs to continue defending itself.
“We will continue to support the people of Ukraine for as long as it takes. We will continue to work with our allies and partners.
