CAIRO: Anish and Simranpreet Kaur Brar won a silver medal at ISSF World Championship after losing 14-16 to the experienced Ukrainian pair of Yulia Korostylova and Maksym Horodynets in the 25m rapid-fire pistol mixed team event here on Thursday.
The medal took India’s total to 26, including 10 gold, six silver and 10 bronze and they remain second behind China in the table.
Anish and Simranpreet shot solidly throughout the day at Egypt’s International Olympic City (EIOC) Shooting Range, leading the qualifying phase with a combined total of 575 after 30 shots apiece.
The second stage – reduced to eight out of 14 teams – won them again with a score of 383 out of a possible 400.
The Ukrainians came second to follow them in the final with 380.
At this point, Rhythm Sangwan and Vijayveer Sidhu, the second Indian pair in the top eight, have retired in fifth place.
It was a hard-fought finale as fortunes continued to sway throughout the 15 five-hit series it took to reach 16 points.
The young Indian pair equalized at 6-6, 9-9, 11-11 and finally 14-14, before falling in the 15th and final series. In fact, they had also taken an 8-6 lead at one point, but the Ukrainians came in with the better finish.
Anish was particularly good in the final, recording seven perfect fives in round 15.
In the other highlight of the day, the three Indians completed their qualifying stints in the women’s 50m rifle 3 position (3P) competition, which has four quota places for the Paris 2024 Olympics on the line.
Anjum Moudgil shot 587 to finish fourth in relay one.
The shooters in this event fire 20 shots each in the Kneeling, Prone and finally Standing positions.
Sift Kaur Samra shot 585 to place seventh in the second elimination stint with Ashi Chouksey, who shot 581 in the same stint for an 18th place finish.
Esha Singh topped her qualifying round in the junior women’s 10m air pistol event with a score of 578 but finished fifth in the seeding round with a score of 199.4.
