NEWCASTLE: Newcastle United striker Miguel Almiron scored a superb first-half goal to secure a 1-0 win over Toothless Everton in their premier league game at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
Paraguay international Almiron curled a shot from the edge of the box into the top corner just after the half-hour mark as the sixth-placed home side secured a fourth victory of the campaign and moved to 18 points from 11 games .
It was a third consecutive defeat for Everton, who had striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the starting line-up for the first time this season but lacked the quality on the ball to trouble the hosts.
“It’s a huge win for us,” Newcastle captain Kieran Trippier told Amazon Prime. “We’ve had a good period recently and we want to continue to move the league forward and compete at the top of the table.
“We didn’t give our best today, but we confirmed the result.
“Since the gaffer (Eddie Howe) came here, and myself, it’s been a positive place. We’ve been doing well.
“The last two games not really, but we always get the results we want. Long may it continue.”
Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy fired over the crossbar with a first effort from the edge of the box before Calvert-Lewin headed in for a corner from Everton’s only real chance.
Bruno Guimaraes fired twice wide of the post in the minutes after the first game as Newcastle could have entered half-time more than a goal ahead before giving up the majority of the ball in the second half, but never seemed to concede.
Newcastle travel to Tottenham Hotspur for their next match on Sunday after an increasingly desperate Everton, slipping on the table, hosted Crystal Palace the day before. The Toffees are now 15th with 10 points from 11 games.
