PONTEVEDRA (Spain): Wrestler A man secured India at least a silver medal in the men’s 57kg freestyle by competing in the U-23 World Championship final on Friday.
Aman, the only Indian male freestyle wrestler to get a visa and take part in the tournament, beat Bekzat Almaz Uulu of Kyrgyzstan 10-5 on points to secure his place in the title clash.
He will face Ahmet Duman Turkey in the final.
Aman had previously defeated Hansana Madushanka Rodrigo Ganegodage Sri Lanka in the first round before getting the better of Japan’s Toshiya Abe in the quarter-finals.
Earlier in the tournament, India’s Greco-Roman wrestlers made history by winning three championship medals.
Vikas (72kg), Sajan Bhanwala (77kg) and Nitesh (97kg) had won a bronze medal each in Greco-Roman, while Ankush had won a silver medal in the women’s 50kg event.
The Indian wrestlers had never won a medal in the Greco-Roman category at the event, but ended their campaign with three medals.
