In some places, Dhanvantari, the Hindu god of Ayurveda is worshiped in Dhanteras. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Dhanvantari emerged during the Samudra Manthan among gods and demons. He holds a pot full of Amrit in one hand and a book on Ayurveda in the other.
For Dhanteras, the houses are cleaned in advance. On the day of the festival, the houses are decorated with rangoli to welcome God. At night, terracotta diyas are lit in the houses to honor God.
