T20 World Cup: Jasprit Bumrah’s absence doesn’t mean we start doing extra stuff, says Bhuvneshwar Kumar | Cricket News

SYDNEY: Jasprit BumrahThe absence of the bowler is no doubt a huge loss but it never meant that the current bowling unit would deviate from their individual plans to overcompensate for the absence of the first bowler, said Indian designer Bhuvneshwar Kumar .
While Bumrah was excluded from the T20 World Cup due to a stress fracture in his back, Bhuvneshwar himself had gone through a tough time during the Asian Cup and subsequent bilateral series as his performance in the fatalities went under the scanner.
However, the Meerut man was in excellent pace overall and it was his first period of incisive swing that created pressure on Pakistan, helping youngster Arshdeep Singh to get wickets from Mohammed Rizwan and Babar Azam.
So, did the bowling unit do anything more to make up for Bumrah’s absence?
“The kind of bowler that Bumrah is, it’s definitely a big loss for the team. It’s not like we have to do anything more that Bumrah isn’t there,” Bhuvneshwar told reporters in mixed zone after another close show against the Netherlands.

“Even if Bumrah had been there, we couldn’t have done those extra things. We’re doing exactly what our strengths are.”
When asked if criticism of his Asian Cup death bowling hurt him after doing admirably well for India for a decade, Bhuvneshwar gave the impression that he was not amused.
“Itni saalon mein ek baar ho gayi cheezein kharab. So ho gayi. Baat khatm. (For all these years I had this unique tournament. It happened. It’s done and dusted off).
“The media and commentators can say a lot of things (about death bowling), but as a team we knew we would have our share of ups and downs.

“T20 is a format where it can be tough for the bowlers and even the batters if the lane is tough. But as the Asian Cup is a big event, people tend to value you that much more.”
Bhuvneshwar said he stays away from social media during big events.
“During the World Cup, I completely stay away from social media and I have no idea what is written. Because those are the social media from which you learn all these things.”
In the tournament opener against Pakistan, Bhuvneshwar literally tormented Rizwan with his swing and he said he didn’t expect so much swing in Australia.
“I didn’t expect my deliveries to swing so much. Whether it was me or Arshdeep who has two wickets, Arshdeep and I complimented each other. So you can say I was happy,” the senior bowler said.
Talk to Arshdeep and his face lights up.
“He’s been amazing since his debut. He always asked what kind of lane would be offered and what kind of shots the hitters would play on that lane. He asks me and Rohit and Virat. Considering his first T20 WC, he’s going very good.”

Bhuvneshwar also confirmed that there were no death bowlers assigned.
“There is no assigned death pitcher as such. You can’t plan like that in cricket, where even before a tournament starts you know who your death pitchers are.
“A lot of things are instinctive and the captain is taking a call on how he assesses the situation at this particular moment.”
PREPARATION IN PERTH WAS VERY IMPORTANT
The Indian team had a seven-day camp in Perth and that’s why while facing South Africa on Saturday, it could work to the advantage of the team.
“The first phase of preparation when we landed here in Perth was the most crucial. The strategy changes with each team as the hitters change. We discussed and trained on executing the plans.
“If you lose a game first in a tournament and that too against a tough team like Pakistan, it would have been difficult to make a comeback.”
The tendency in such events is for batters to go to hell for leather in the back 10, he said.
“You might get the impression that as a bowling unit we’ve conceded 15-20 more (34 in the last 3 overs) but that’s been a model for all the teams at this World Cup” , Bhuvneshwar said.
“If you see most games, the teams haven’t scored a lot in the top 10, but once the ball gets a little older, the batters start making runs.”
