Iranian authorities have announced that they will hold public trials for at least 1,000 of the protesters detained in the country for their participation in anti-government demonstrations following the death of a woman who died in police custody after being arrested for improperly wearing headgear.
The mass accusations, which will put at least 1,000 people on trial, mark the government’s first major legal action to crack down on dissent from the riots that erupted over six weeks ago following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.
Amini died in police custody on September 16 after being arrested by the “moral police” for not wearing the mandatory veil of the country required of women.
Amini’s death sparked protests and violent clashes with government forces across the country and at least 250 people are believed to have been killed while 14,000 have been arrested, according to human rights groups.

Iranian state news agency IRNA quoted judicial officials as saying that a thousand people who played a central role in the protests would be tried in Tehran for their “subversive actions”, including attacking security guards. the fire of public properties and other charges.
“Those who intend to confront and subvert the regime depend on foreigners and will be punished according to legal standards,” said the head of the Iranian judiciary, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei, indicating that some protesters are allegedly accused of collaborating with foreign governments. Tehran officials repeated unsupported claims that Iran’s foreign enemies fomented the unrest.
