AMMAN (Jordan): Mohammad of India Hussamuddin showed his experience and temper to pick up a narrow victory and advance to the quarter-finals of the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships on Wednesday.
Facing Seiitbek Uulu Munarbek of Kyrgyzstan in the pre-quarter-finals, Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Hussamuddin (57kg) started on a bright note and showed his technical superiority and clean boxing in the first round, but his opponent came back strong in the second round to make a comeback. .
Both boxers had everything to play for in the last round and they started attacking early on but Hussamuddin kept his composure and landed more accurate punches and dodged his opponent consistently to secure a split 3- 2 in his favour.
He will face Pakistan’s Ilyas Hussain in the quarter-finals.
Late Tuesday evening, Lakshya Chahar (80kg) masked Shabbat Negmat of Tajikistan 5-0 in their pre-quarter-final fight to advance to the next round.
Later, Sparsh will face the Olympic bronze medalist and defending world champion Saken Bibosinov in the quarter-final bout.
Two Indian boxers – Savita (50 kg) and Kapil (86 kg) – will be in action on Thursday in the round of 16.
The competition sees the participation of 267 boxers from the 27 top boxing nations.
