On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke publicly on camera for the first time about the attack on her husband, Paul, and his ongoing recovery, saying “it’s going to be a long time, but he’ll be fine. “.

“Paul came home yesterday. It allows me to be at home with you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind words and good wishes for Paul,” the House Speaker said in a video posted to her. Twitter and YouTube account.

“It will be long, but he will be fine. And, it’s so tragic how it happened, but nonetheless, we have to be optimistic. He’s surrounded by his family, so that’s a wonderful thing.

Paul Pelosi, 82, was released from a San Francisco hospital earlier this week after recovering from surgery to repair a fractured skull and injuries to his hand and arm. He had been hospitalized for six days following the October 28 brutal attack at the couple’s home in San Francisco. The speaker was in Washington, DC at the time of the attack.

The man accused of attacking Pelosi, David DePape, 42, has been charged with six counts related to the incident, including attempted murder, burglary, assault, forcible confinement and threatening a member of the family of a public official. He pleaded not guilty to all charges against the state.

On Friday, he waived his appearance in a higher court in San Francisco. A status hearing has been set for November 28 and a preliminary hearing has been set for December 14.

Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have condemned the violence, prompting renewed concerns for the safety of lawmakers and their families amid increasingly hostile political rhetoric in the current political climate.

Court documents released Tuesday alleged DePape told police he was on a “suicide mission” and had a list of other high profile targets. During the incident, according to the documents, DePape woke Paul Pelosi by standing at his bedside and preventing him from escaping – while demanding to know the whereabouts of the Speaker of the House.

DePape told officers and medics at the scene that he was fed up with the “level of lies” coming from Washington, D.C., and “came here to have a little chat with [Paul Pelosi’s] woman,” according to a court filing Tuesday.

Paul Pelosi was questioned by the San Francisco Police Department and the FBI over the weekend, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Friday.

“I will say it was a successful interview, he has memories of the event and so we were able to successfully conduct this interview to better understand what happened,” she said on “Erin Burnett OutFront,” adding that he “was able to answer many of the questions he was asked about how the event went.
