Shark Attacks Swimmer in Waters Near San Diego | News from the United States

A shark attacked a woman in the waters off San Diego.

The woman was treated in the hospital for puncture wounds and lacerations to the upper right thigh, according to Jon Edelbrock, chief lifeguard for the city of Del Mar.

The woman received stitches and is recovering.

Mr. Edelbrock said the shark it may have been a young white shark, although officials are waiting for scientists to confirm this.

Young great white sharks often swim in the Pacific waters off the coast of Del Mar.

A lifeguard spotted the woman with a friend shortly after 10 on Friday as they were returning to shore after swimming more than a mile, Edelbrock said.

He noticed that their strokes changed and the friend waved his arms for help when they were a few hundred meters from the beach, but outside the surf zone.

He said the lifeguards helped the couple get back to shore, but they didn’t spot the shark.

The beach has been closed for at least 48 hours.

“He had a diligent swim partner,” said Mr. Edelbrock. “They both kept their composure pretty well.”

Del Mar is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of downtown San Diego.

According to local media, an 8-foot-long young white shark died Sunday on the shores of the Torrey Pines State Nature Reserve and State Beach, nearly three miles south of the attack.
