Brazilian GP: George Russell wins first grand prix, Lewis Hamilton second | Racing News

SAO PAULO: George Russell claimed his first Formula 1 victory by winning the Brazilian GP at Interlagos on Sunday with Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton second.
The duo had started on the front row, but the crash-ridden race was far from a procession to the team’s first victory of the season. Hamilton hit Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, already crowned champion, on lap seven.
The Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finished third and fourth with Fernando Alonso fifth in an Alpine.
The race started with a crash as Daniel Ricciardo in a McLaren and Kevin Magnussen in a Haas collided, spun and crashed again on the opening lap.
When the race resumed after a safety car, Verstappen made an immediate and determined attempt to pass former rival Lewis Hamilton and did not back down when the Briton fought back to take a slight advantage around a corner.
Cars collided, debris flew. Hamilton ran off the track before returning to the race but Verstappen paid a higher price.
Almost immediately, Lando Norris, who failed to finish, and Charles Leclerc also touched.
Verstappen and Norris both received five-second penalties.
Verstappen also suffered damage that forced a pit stop for repairs, but fought back to cross the line sixth.
