Qatari security threatens to break Danish TV team’s camera during live broadcast ahead of World Cup | world news

A Danish television crew’s live broadcast in Qatar was interrupted by security guards who threatened to break their camera claiming they had no permit.

TV2 journalist Rasmus Tantholdt was reporting live from a street in Doha ahead of the FIFA World Cup when he was arrested by officials on Tuesday night.

Three men in traditional dress pulled up behind the news anchor in an electric cart and tried to block the camera lens.

Mr Tantholdt was heard saying in English: “You invited the whole world to come here, why can’t we film? This is a public place.”

After showing them his press credentials, he added: “You can break the camera, you want to break it? Are you threatening us by breaking the camera?”

Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy has since issued an apology.

They said the reporters were “interrupted by mistake”.

“Following inspection of the team’s valid tournament accreditation and filming permit, an apology was issued to the broadcaster by on-site security before the team resumed operations,” a statement read.

Tournament bosses also said they had spoken to Mr Tantholdt and “issued notice to all entities to adhere to the filming permissions in place for the tournament”.

Players threaten to protest despite bans

Like many of the other 32 nations competing, Denmark have been highly critical of Qatar’s record on human rights and treatment of the LGBTQ community.

Their kits will feature a toned down badge and the manufacturer’s logo as they take on their Group D colleagues, in protest against migrant worker rights.
