A plane taking off from an airport in Peru caught fire after colliding with a moving fire engine on the runway.

A LATAM Airlines plane, carrying 102 passengers and six crew, struck a moving fire truck at Lima International Airport on Friday afternoon.

Authorities said the plane’s passengers and crew were all safe, but two firefighters in the truck were killed.

Images on social media showed huge plumes of black smoke near the rear of the plane which was partially on fire.

It remains unclear why the fire truck entered the runway as the plane was taking off and the prosecutors office said
he was investigating the incident as a potential manslaughter.

Lima Airport Partners, the company that operates Jorge Chavez Airport, said operations at the facility have been suspended and the airport will remain closed until at least 1 p.m. local time on Saturday.

A video posted on Twitter by the Peruvian radio Nacional shows the plane on fire on the runway before it came to a stop.

Luis Ponce La Jara, general commander of the fire brigade, confirmed that two firefighters were killed and one injured in the collision.

Peruvian President Pedro Castillo expressed his “thoughts and prayers” to the families of the firefighters killed in the incident.
