West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran relinquishes white ball captaincy | Cricket News

West Indies’ Nicholas Poran withdraws while white balloon captaincy following their disappointment T20 World Cup released in Australia, West Indies Cricket said Monday.
The two-time champions made their first outing since the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, failing to reach the Super 12 stage after tasteless qualifying losses to Ireland and Scotland.
“In stepping down now as captain of the West Indies white ball, I think it is in the best interest of the team and for me personally, because I have to focus on what I can bring to the team as a than a player,” Pooran said.
“It’s not me giving up. I remain ambitious and I always see the captaincy of West Indies cricket as an honor granted to you.”
West Indies appointed a three-person panel to review the Caribbean flop, with little time to rebuild before co-hosting the next T20 World Cup in 2024 with the United States.
“The T20 World Cup is something that shouldn’t define us and I will gladly get involved in future reviews,” Pooran said.
“And even though it will be several months before we reunite as a team, I want to give CWI enough time to prepare for the games against South Africa in March and beyond,” said he added.
The next series of West Indies white balls will be against South Africa in March 2023.
