School shootings in Brazil leave 3 dead, 11 injured

BRASILIA (BRAZIL): A shooter armed with a semi-automatic pistol and wearing a bulletproof vest shot dead three people, including two teachers, and injured 11 on Friday after bursting into two schools in the southeast Brazilauthorities said.
The shooting took place at a public school with elementary and middle school students and a private school, both located on the same street in the small town of Aracruz in Holy Spirit state, the state public safety secretariat said in a statement. The identity of the third person killed was not immediately clear, nor was it known if any students were killed or injured. The shooter is still at large, the secretariat said.
Security camera footage showed the shooter wearing a bulletproof vest and using a semi-automatic pistol for the attacks, Espirito Santo’s public security secretary said. Marcio Celante said in a video provided by the secretariat’s press office.
Two teachers were killed and nine instructors were injured, said Celante, who noted that at the public school the shooter gained access to the staff room after breaking a lock.
The shooter had covered his face, which made it difficult to identify him, Celante said, adding that police were investigating whether he had been helped by others.
School shootings are rare in Brazil, but have occurred with somewhat higher frequency in recent years.
In a video posted on social media, Espirito Santo Governor Renato Casagrande said he was monitoring the situation and had sent authorities to investigate.
