The first week of FIFA World Cup 2022 saw both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo score, in addition to some big upsets in the form of Argentina and Germany lose their first group matches and a huge seven-goal win for Spain.
Here’s a look at how the numbers stack up so far:
3 – Germany have now lost their opening game in three consecutive major tournaments – (1-2 to Japan at 2022 CM; 0-1 against France at Euro 2020 and 0-1 against Mexico at the 2018 World Championships). The latest loss was also Germany’s first in a match in which they held a World Cup half-time lead since 1978 against Austria.

seven – Spain’s 7-0 loss to Costa Rica is their biggest winning margin in a World Cup match.
18 – At 18 years and 110 days, Gavi became the youngest to score at a World Cup since 17-year-old PelĂ© scored three hat-tricks in 1958. Gavi is also the first teenager to score for Spain in the WC.
6 – By scoring 7 goals against Costa Rica, Spain became the sixth nation to score 100 or more goals in the World Cup. Brazil (231 goals) tops the standings.

0 – Costa Rica didn’t manage a single shot in their 0-7 loss to Spain.
4 – After losing 0-1 to Belgium, Canada went scoreless in all four of their World Cup games.
37 – At 37 years and 292 days, Ronaldo is now the oldest player to score for Portugal at the World Cup. He is also the youngest, having scored in the 2006 World Cup at 21 years and 132 days.
