For the last couple of years, visiting Santa Claus has been a little different.
Santa has often had to sit behind a desk instead of cradling babies on his lap, disguising himself to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
But in the United States, things are starting to go back to the way they were before the pandemic.
A website that allows retailers to book an appearance by Santa says they’ve seen a 30% increase in demand since last year.
But that hasn’t been without challenges, as the company has lost an estimated 15% of its artists to retirement or death since the start of the pandemic.
Santas across the country are allowed the freedom to wear a mask if they choose, but in many places that’s now no longer a requirement.
There are exceptions to the rule, though. At the world-famous Macy’s flagship store in New York, a table will continue to separate Santa Claus from the amazed visitors.
According to Mitch Allen, the founder of HireSanta.com, its artists will earn up to $12,000 (£10,000) over the holiday period.
Her agency also welcomes more inclusive Santa requests, including performers who are female, Black, Deaf, or Spanish-speaking.
Melissa Rickard, 48, made her debut when she was in her early 20s and said: ‘I haven’t been busted by boys yet and, with one exception, not even by parents.
“Having a kid who can’t tell I’m a woman in a way is the ultimate compliment because it means I’m doing Santa justice. It makes my husband laugh.”
Mrs Rickard charges $175 (£145) per hour, and once the fuel is paid, she donates the rest of the money to charity.
This Christmas, millions of children around the world will be thrilled to see Santa Claus and the feeling will be mutual.
“I can’t even explain how excited we are to see everyone’s smiles at all of the locations this season with nothing hiding those beautiful faces,” said Chris Landtroop, of Santa Claus agency Cherry Hill Programs.
