World Cup 2022: Brazil eliminated after losing to Croatia on penalties | world news

Tournament favorites Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup after losing to Croatia who won on penalties 4-2 in the quarter-finals.

The match ended scoreless after regulation time.

Then superstar Neymar equaled Pele’s Brazil goalscoring record of 77 FIFA goals to give his side the lead in the first half of extra time at the Education City Stadium.

However, Bruno Petkovic equalized with just four minutes remaining as the game ended 1-1.

Brazil had outclassed South Korea in the round of 16 with a 4-1 win – and they were hotly tipped to add another World Cup title to their five so far.

However, Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic once again proved to be the hero of the 2018 finalists.

He made three saves from the penalty spot in Croatia’s grueling last 16 games against Japan and pulled off a string of saves to keep Brazil out for the first 90 minutes without a goal.

Livakovic then saved a Rodrygo penalty and Marquinhos hit the post.

“It’s fair for the Croatian people,” said winning coach Zlatko Dalic.

“A great game from the first minute to the last. We knocked out the biggest favorites. It’s not the end for us, let’s carry on.

“It’s a victory for all of us, everyone gave their best. Thanks also to those who are on the bench, who also live for this national team.”
