DUBAI: Parmjeet Kumar and Shakina Khatun won a silver and bronze respectively to open India’s account at the 12th Fazza Para Powerlifting World Cup on Thursday.
Kumar, a bronze medalist at the Commonwealth Games and World Championships, settled for second place after a successful lift of 165kg for men up to 49kg.
He finished behind the Paralympic champion Omar Qarada of Jordan, who achieved a best lift of 176 kg.
“It was a good performance. I’m happy with my 165kg lift which I targeted coming to compete in Dubai. There is work to be done on my technique and to do even better at the Asian Para Games” , Kumar said.
Khatun settled for the bronze medal with her only successful lift of 90 kg in the women’s category up to 50 kg.
They finished behind Brazil Maria Rizon assists da Silva (95 kg) and Italian Emanuela Ita Romano (92 kg).
Around 200 lifters from 40 nations are competing in the last Para Powerlifting World Cup of the season.
