LISBON: Fernando Santos will leave his post as Portugal after his side lost to Morocco in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday.
The Portuguese suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Morocco in Qatar on Saturday, after Santos started with the country’s top scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo, on the substitutes’ bench.
Santos, who has been widely criticized for his tactics, became Portugal manager in 2014 and led the country to 109 appearances. They won the European Championship in 2016 and the first UEFA Nations League in 2018-19.
Portuguese media have reported that an agreement has been reached between the country’s football federation (FPF) and Santos and an announcement will be made soon.
