India seal FIH Pro League berth, beat Spain 1-0 to win Women’s Nations Cup | Hockey News


NEW DELHI: Ace Indian drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur scored a very important winner in the sixth minute of the final as India recorded a 1-0 win over Spain to clinch the inaugural FIH Women’s Nations Cup title in Valencia, Spain on Saturday.
With this victory, India also secured their place in the 2023-24 season FIH Pro League. India was ranked one place behind Spain (7th) in the FIH ranking.

India ended the eight-nation tournament with five straight wins after Gurjit converted the penalty corner into a goal in the very first quarter.
The team coached by Janneke Schopman defeated Ireland 2-1 in a shootout in the semi-finals on Friday.
By winning the Nations Cup, the Indian women’s team was promoted to the 2023-24 FIH Pro League, a key event ahead of next year. asian games and Paris 2024 Olympics.
India and Spain contested the FIH Women’s Championship professional hockey league 2021-22 season as replacement teams after Australia and New Zealand withdrew due to COVID-19 issues.
India finished third in the 2021-22 FIH Pro League. The country did not qualify for the current 2022-23 Pro League season.
